Woland - A Collaborative Mythic Realm - Part 12

This is part of an ongoing project that you can read about here.

Part XII - The Devil's Spine

This region has been designed by Morgen, who has some great art on their Blusky account and is working on a really cool expansion to Mythic Bastionland: Bushi-Den. And some of that vibe has been brought into Woland.

Here is Morgen's piece:

THE DEVIL’S SPINE

A region of dense forests, needle-like mountains, and an immense lake. The locals say that a strange sect of monks have appeared on the mountain, worshipping the omniscient “All-seer” and practicing the Way of the Burning Match, an esoteric martial art using forbidden blackpowder weaponry.

All across the Devil’s Spine, the Company can hear firework-like crackling echoing through the mountains

HEX H6 - Dwelling - the Woodsman’s Shack

A small wooden shack inhabited by an old woodsman.

● Takezo, the woodsman - An old, grumpy woodsman, who resents the monks on Mt. Indra. Says he can’t get a good night’s sleep with all the fireworks up there.

HEX I6 - Barrier (North/Northwest) - Special Monument - The Sunken Minstrel

In a small pond beneath a waterfall sits a moss-covered statue of a woman holding a lute, with a billowing scarf that could almost be mistaken for silk rather than stone. After spending a phase to restore SPI at the monument, the Company witnesses the statue strum her lute, and then disappear beneath the pond. After this, the monument cannot be used again.

HEX J6 - Barrier (North/Northwest) - Empty

HEX I7 - Special Site - Temple of the Burning Match, Mt. Indra

Full site details below.

HEX I8 - Chapel - Shrine to the Great Carp

A wooden structure that sits on a pier on the lake’s edge. Tended to by a lone priestess

● Priestess Omatsu - A young woman with a disconcertingly cheerful smile. Will happily bestow the Great Carp’s blessing (Breathe underwater for a phase) upon anyone who can dive to the lakebed

1
Desolate courtyard, adjacent to a prayer hall and a statue to a god of purification. A booming voice warns the Company that they must prove their worth to gain the temple’s blessing

2
Ornate prayer hall. 5 Monks of the Burning Match attack the company. If they take a mortal wound, they are revived after one phase in a flash of fire and smoke.

3
Prayer room with an altar to a god of compassion. The path to the northwest is filled with incense that causes 1d6 clarity loss, 2d6 on a failed VIG save. If CLA is reduced to 0 in this way, the target falls unconscious, and awakens outside the temple.

4
Warrior-priest Haramita attacks the company, commending them on their bravery. If he takes a mortal wound, he disappears in a cloud of smoke and sparks. Against the mountain peak sits a statue of the all-seer.

5
Central prayer hall. A single bell sits amidst hundreds of candles. Ringing the bell grants visions of the next Omen in the closest myth, at the cost of d6 SPI The northwest path is a rickety bridge guarded by a bell monk. Each time the monk deals 0 damage in an attack, the bridge gets weaker. After 3 hits, the bridge collapses, causing 2d6 VIG loss and sending the company back down the mountain

6
Five-story pagoda guarded by Abbott Gyatei. If he takes a mortal wound, he explodes (2d10 blast) but then appears unharmed and unarmoured inside the crater, congratulating the Company on their valor. Inside the pagoda is a sacred artifact of ki redistribution. Use for a phase to increase two stats by 1d6 and reduce 1 stat by 1d6.
